MARIETTA – Finding parts for vintage cars can be tricky, especially early cars.

Some parts can be purchased from commercial vendors, but others are rare and may require traveling long distances to find them.

To help locals restoring cars or salvaging antique parts, the 12th Annual Winter Swap Meet was held Saturday at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

“It’s more of a family event than a sale,” said Tom Moorehead, who was in town from Kentucky for the event. “We haven’t missed a single gathering (except during the pandemic).”

Moorehead said each year they hope to see more young enthusiasts join in the fun.

Moorehead didn’t exaggerate the family ties of the hobby. Another group set up was that of Lucius. Deanna Lucius explained that they first became interested in parts repair when her two sons took up the hobby a few years ago.

“My husband and I joined them, then finally took over and now our daughter is learning alongside us,” she says. Lucius said his youngest son was also interested in learning, but at 12 he’s not quite ready to fix the parts they sell.

“We specialize in the repair of magneto field coils,” she says. (These provide voltage for the ignition system.)

Lucius explained the process.

“Castings are stripped, sandblasted and checked for flatness; Then a new terminal block is installed and new copper wrapped with three milliliter Teflon tape resistant to high temperatures, abrasion and chemicals. Then it is wrapped in cotton, tested for polarity and magnetic attraction, vacuum dipped in high quality electric varnish and baked.

However, not everyone was selling coins.

Jamie Eaton, owner of Woodwork in Vienna, brought out showcases of tools.

“The boxes are designed to display the original tools to come with a Model A,” he said.

It’s hard to piece together complete sets, but Eaton said some in the area have them or are going to meetups looking for their missing pieces.
