BOONVILLE – The Gamma Psi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society held its annual spring dinner meeting April 26 in the Fellowship Building of the North Oak Ridge Baptist Church. The Gamma Psi Chapter is made up of educators from the Elkin area and Yadkin County, which is part of the North Carolina DKG State Organization and the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society. The members are recognized educators who have rendered distinctive service in the field of education and who wish to unite with other educators of the world in a true spiritual brotherhood.
President Melva Edmisten welcomed the members and Karen Spencer gave the invocation. The group socialized while enjoying a meal prepared by Mazzini’s of Elkin.
After the meal, the meeting was opened. Beth Felts presented the report of the scholarship committee indicating that there will be four recipients for the Mary Speer Martin Trust and two for the Eva Hine scholarship in the 2022-2023 school year. The Chairs of the Membership, Educational Excellence, and Communications and Marketing Committees reported on their work during the biennium. Committee members were recognized and thanked for their dedication to achieving the goals and success of the Chapter. Barbara Long was recognized as the chapter’s Golden Key recipient and Tonya Allison as a Rising Star recipient.
New officials for the 2022-2024 biennium have been installed. Chair: Tonya Allison; 1st Vice President: Cynthia Russell; 2nd Vice President: Linda Hicks; Corresponding secretary: Beth Fels. Recording Secretary appointed Myra Cox was unable to attend and will be seated at the fall meeting with the Treasurer appointed by the Executive Council. Melva presented Tonya Allison with the Gamma Psi Chapter Presidents pin and Barbara Long presented Melva with a Past President pin.
Members Brenda Couch, Melva Edmisten and Tonya Allison presented a Gamma Psi Past, Present, Future program. Brenda, founding member, shared her past experiences in a formal Gamma Psi organization. Melva, current president, shared where the chapter is today and its many accomplishments. Newly installed President Tonya shared her plans for the future of the Section, using her example of working with National Councils to encourage members to take on new roles and look to DKG membership offers.
Membership Chair Maria Moxley was assisted by members to lead the induction ceremony of Keshia Edwards, Elizabeth Petree, Emily Rycroft and Britt Kimbrell as new members of the Gamma Psi Chapter. After signing the membership register, each inductee received a red rose, lapel pin, membership certificate and chapter name tag.
The winners of the raffle for the nightly prizes of a gift card and also several potted geraniums were drawn. Sharon Harvey was the dues paid winner for the 2022-2023 membership year.
Melva closed the meeting by thanking all members for their support during her biennium as Chair and asked members to continue the same for the new leaders. Melva and Barbara Long represented the chapter at the NC DKG 2022 conference this spring in Asheville.
