It was a great week for putting in place the regulatory and political elements. On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized stricter fuel economy standards for the fleet this will bring the passenger vehicle and light truck fleet to around 49 mpg in 2026. And in the midst of it all, an alliance of 16 states and ethanol groups continues to challenge EPA emissions rulesalleging that they signal that the EPA favors one technology over another.

The US Postal Service is actually doubling its order of electric mail trucksin a surprise move that throws another wild card into a confused hand surrounding its next-generation trucks, which will start hitting the roads in 2023.
If the U.S. develops policy around sales of all-electric passenger vehicles by 2035 and all-electric heavy-duty trucks by 2040, the American Lung Association predicted this week a cumulative $1.2 trillion in public health benefits from 2020 to 2050. This is in addition to global climate benefits.

The week’s biggest domestic manufacturing announcement didn’t come from GM or Ford, but Vietnamese automaker Vinfast announced plans produce electric vehicles in North Carolina from 2024— with a $2 billion factory capable of manufacturing 150,000 vehicles a year.
Stellantis and LG Energy Solution have announced plans for a Canadian Joint Venture Battery Factory. Potentially producing up to 45 GWh per year, enough for hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles per year, it will be the automaker’s first large-scale venture in North America.
Battery maker CATL on Wednesday announced a third-generation version of its cell-to-pack technology to help reduce costs and create packaging advantages. He claims this version produces more power – in the same volume – compared to the latest Tesla 4680 format battery technology.

According to a German magazine, Porsche is working on a version of its 911 sports car powered by solid state battery technology. Porsche’s parent company, Volkswagen Group, is a longtime investor in semiconductor company QuantumScape and VW has suggested the technology could enable high-end models with super-fast charging packs later in the decade.
Former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, now CEO of battery recycling company Redwood Materials, recently suggested that EV batteries should last about 15 years. That’s a bit longer than battery warranties. Meanwhile, Straubel pointed out that given the current supply chain insecurities, the track for setting up EV battery recovery and recycling processes has become shorter.
Lotus has revealed the Eletre, its first SUV as well as its first vehicle to be built outside the UK.
